When minimum wage first came into effect, its original duty was to allow Americans to pay for a minimum yet livable lifestyle.
However, the value of the American dollar has been decreasing for decades, and many people are struggling to keep up with inflation and the changing rate of buying power.
Even so, some believe minimum wage is not required to fulfill a minimum lifestyle. Instead it should establish a wage floor, and be reserved for workers in positions of less experience or education.
